Pilates is an intense full-body workout which produces longer, leaner muscles and graceful, efficient movement. The principles of Breathing, Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, and Flow incorporated into workouts result in a high degree of strength in the core or “Powerhouse” of the body-the abs, lower back, hips, and buttocks. Students stretch and strengthen their muscles using spring-resistance apparatus such as the Reformer and Cadillac, which help to align, stabilize, and challenge the body. Practiced regularly, and combined with some form of cardiovascular exercise, pilates gives you better posture and energy and the most streamlined version of your body—a long, strong, toned body with no bulk.

A forerunner of today's mind-body fitness explosion, Joseph H. Pilates (1880-1967) dedicated his life to developing and promoting an extensive, integrated exercise system with the express purpose of helping all people to achieve a state of good health and balance. The majority of this system of over 500 exercises (known originally as “Contrology”), performed on floor mats and specially-designed apparatus based on springs, was created during the early 20th century and was wildly popular with gymnasts, athletes, and dancers. Today the benefits of pilates are enjoyed by people from all walks of life, and can be of special help in achieving high performance, maintaining and regaining pre- and postnatal fitness, and in the management of lower back pain.
